Henry Cavill On Longines, Legacy, And His Growing Love Of Watches

Henry Cavill spent nearly a decade saving the world as Superman, but it turns out the Man of Steel's greatest challenge wasn't battling supervillains—it was finding the perfect watch. The actor who brought Clark Kent to life for almost ten years has traded his cape for a different kind of precision instrument, becoming the newest ambassador for Swiss watchmaker Longines and diving headfirst into the wide world of watches.

Shortly after Cavill's announcement to join a strong list of Longines' roster of brand ambassadors, including Jennifer Lawrence and Kate Winslet, the Swatch Group-owned, Saint-Imier-based Longines unveiled the Longines Spirit Zulu Time 1925, celebrating the 100-year anniversary of the brand's pioneering aviation watch.

The Spirit Zulu Time 1925, as TanTan wrote about on launch, features a distinctive 39mm stainless steel case with a bi-directional rose gold-capped rotating bezel, a design element that allows pilots and travelers to track multiple time zones simultaneously. Naturally, this watch seems ideal for someone, such as Cavill, with a hectic, globe-trotting film schedule. The watch's deep blue dial, reminiscent of the vast sky and ocean that early aviators navigated, is complemented by luminous Arabic numerals and hands, ensuring readability in challenging conditions.

"Watches have been around on the periphery of my work and lifestyle for a while now, but never in a dedicated passion," Cavill told me. "When the opportunity to work with Longines happened, it was their story that really intrigued me. They were the first in a fair few things when it came to watchmaking, and often worked with pioneers. So, it was their innovation and support of reaching unseen horizons that piqued my interest."

Most readers can relate to the journey from casual appreciation to genuine passion. Cavill's enthusiasm for the anniversary piece is palpable. "I love it," he exclaimed. "Previously, I was more of a leather and gold man, but this watch is just so beautiful and has some wonderful references to its origins that I enjoy wearing it every time I do. To name one, it's the rose gold in the watch that calls back to the copper of the meridian line in the UK."

His collection is carefully curated. "I have three that I rotate through at the moment," he revealed. "The Master Collection GMT in rose gold with a brown leather strap, the Spirit Zulu Time 1925, and the Ultra Cron Carbon." The parallels between his technical hobbies became clear when discussing his approach to watches. "I'm getting there," he admitted when asked if he approached watches with the same obsession he brought to building custom computers. "I enormously enjoyed going to Saint-Imier in Switzerland to see the process and attention to detail required. It opened my eyes."

For an actor whose schedule spans continents and time zones, the practicality of his choices becomes paramount. "I travel with the three I mentioned above, and keep them as safe as possible whilst doing so," he explained. "On set, however, my watches will change with the character."

For Cavill, it seems the partnership with Longines represents more than just another endorsement deal. Whether he's building custom gaming rigs or exploring the intricacies of Swiss watchmaking, Cavill's curiosity and methodical approach to his passions seem constant. After all, when you've spent years playing a character who can bend time itself, it makes sense to finally find the perfect way to keep it.
